The New York Times reports on a startling collection of photos acquired by the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, of SS guards and personnel at Aushchwitz cavorting after hours and on retreat, singing songs and generally making merry. A fine testament to how the context of a photo (via)imbues the photograph with meaning and alters the photograph’s importance and place in history. On display at the museum, the photos can be seen online as well, here.
This is especially timely with Ken Burns WWII documentary, The War, commencing Sunday evening; certain to be a visual feast of WWII still photography, and historical context.
