Time was, when you ran out of a photo supply you could pick from the several professional photography suppliers in the area, and stop in for more (a few 50-packs of 7058 out of the cooler anyone?). But the supplies that never run out, the staples that are used in many photo shoots but last forever, are genuine treasures. This spool of gray thread is like that. Similar to the earlier irreverent tool, clear fishing line, this thread can be used to suspend, tie, hold down, or pull back any of a number of set items from clothes to props, but unlike the fishing line is incredibly light weight, easy to pack for location, and usable on the smallest of objects.A lot of product photography is produced on neutral backgrounds, for one reason so the background color doesn’t splash up into the product. This gray thread disappears quite well against neutral backgrounds and even blends with most color backgrounds as well. It’s a strong, cotton covered polyester thread so cut with scissors or get bloody fingers trying to break it (ouch). At 125 yards it will last a loooooong time.Note: I’ll be in Paris next week, so the Irreverent Photo Tool, and other posts, will be skipping a week. But come visit me this Thursday at PhotoPlus. And meanwhile send me your own irreverent tools for posting!Posted by Steve Weinrebe
