CompassThe compass (aka. “pair of compasses”) can draw a perfect circle or arc, or compare the measurement of one gap to another. Besides looking very cool and retro in the studio, a good compass can be used for a variety of photography chores. I routinely create circular gel inserts for one of my spotlight frames, and I create the template out of cardboard with the compass, and then trace the cutout onto the gel with a sharpie. I’ve used the compass for other circular templates for photo filters and small reflectors. Get a kit like this with an extension (right side of the kit) that allows for drawing very large circles. If you need to punch a circular hole in some plywood or background seamless, reach for the compass too, because after all, only Leonardo could draw a perfect circle freehand.
