If you are like me, you may save these 35mm film cans to store quarters for parking meters, shampoo for overnight trips, and that sort of use. But these plastic film containers are truly wonderful photo tools for a host of photographer’s needs. They are very durable and the lid holds tight while being easy to open (with one hand if necessary!). If you have the white translucent type of film can, you can write on it with an indelible marker so that you can quickly grab the one you want from your gaffer case. White paper tape works well for labeling the black plastic ones. Uses include:
- Storage for step-up/step-down tripod thread adapters.
- Storage for plug-in photo slaves (a little cotton may be prudent with small electronics).
- Any types of small adapters that would get lost in a larger pile (I have one holding cable release adapters).
- These are a perfect size for wrapping gaffer tape around, for a small stash of tape. Rather than carry a large roll in a camera bag, a small bit of tape held this way on a film container makes the perfect backup for any photographer needing gaffer tape on the go.
- Push pins or any small sharp objects.
Use your imagination, but these are a few of the ways I use these plastic film cans. My gaffer case is peppered with several and I always keep some in a cabinet. And of course there is the all important stash of quarters for parking meters in my glove compartment…
