Via John Nack’s blog (and apparently from earlier in the summer, that’s what I get for not reading John’s blog daily) – here is some amazing technology to enhance video using still photographs. The video presentation shows the enhancement of static video scenes (camera can be still or moving, but the subjects have to be still) by applying the detail of higher resolution still photographs to the video using the technology these folks (From the U. of Washington, U. of California at Berkeley, Microsoft, and Adobe) have developed. The intention is to apply some startling effects in a user friendly way. Effects include adding high resolution to a low resolution video, steady-cam effects, knocking out obstructions, exposure enhancement, masks to alter scenes, retouching to single frames that become applied to the entire video, and more. I hope this technology is applied to consumer applications soon (Photoshop and/or AfterEffects). These techniques provide an unexpected and welcome application of the convergence of still and video imagery. Video cameras capable of shooting high resolution stills will make for an elegant workflow when combined with this technology.
It is worth noting too, the developers of this technology intend to add the abilities to moving subjects in the future. Link to the video presentation, where the white paper can be downloaded as well, here.
