I am so happy to present this month’s tool, the hot glue gun, because it is an essential irreverent photo tool for every photographer’s toolkit. Some years ago when these handy, and relatively safe, gadgets were becoming popular I visited a friend’s studio. He had just assembled a photo set for an advertising shoot – a room with walls, floor, and molding. I asked him how he did that so quickly and he said he put half of it together with a glue gun. I was fascinated by the notion that a set of that scope could be built without hammer and nails throughout. The glue gun had been used to position wall board against studs before a few screws were placed, and the molding was applied entirely with the glue gun – brilliant. Of course I ran out and purchased one and have since used it frequently.
It is trulyamazing what surfaces the glue gun will bond together: wood, foam core, plaster board, polywood, plexiglass, glass, metal, cloth (to a point), and the list goes on. If you drop a dollop of melted glue on your arm you likely won’t end up in the hospital, and it’ll hurt a lot less than landing a hammer on your thumb.
