Red, the innovators of video cameras that brought the Red One to shake up the video industry, have just released a teaser post for a new hybrid camera called a DSMC (Digital Still & Motion Camera).
The post from Red includes this provocative statement: “We believe, and are developing for late 2009, a replacement for DSLRs.”
The post goes on to say that they look forward to shaking things up for Nikon and Canon who are just now entering the video capture arena with the DSLR form factor (with a hint that the Canon 5D replacement may have 1080i capability). Red refers to the DSMC as a new platform, made possible by their innovative sensor R&D.
Late ’09 is a long time to wait, and Red is forthright about release dates not being necessarily firm. But it’s a fair assumption that Nikon and Canon will still be making DSLRs with some limited video functionality, in camera form factors that are legacy to roll film cameras (left and right pockets with a lens in the middle, view finder on top). Video manufacturers are likewise bound to a certain expected form factor, also based on legacy technology. Red seems to be bound by nothing except innovation (think different?). Link here. Via.
